Faith Beyond the Screen: Staying Rooted in Christ as a Pastor’s Wife
Late-night calls to encourage a weary volunteer don’t get likes. Nobody comments on the hours spent organizing Sunday school materials or pausing to pray over a family’s struggles. Most of the time, these acts go unseen. And yet, ministry often lives in these very moments.
I was reminded of that one night after the house had finally settled. I sat at my kitchen table long after everyone was asleep, typing a message of encouragement to a mom in our church who felt overwhelmed. My laptop was open, bills lay unfinished, and dishes waited in the sink. No one was watching. No likes. No comments. No applause.
Just a small act of care in the middle of an ordinary evening. And somehow, it felt like the most meaningful work I’d done all day. It wasn’t noticed by anyone, it wasn’t shared on social media, and it didn’t earn applause—but in that quiet moment, I felt God at work, using the simple act of love to bring encouragement and hope.
Looking back, it is clear that ministry isn’t measured by likes, applause, or public recognition. So far in this series, Part One called us to remain rooted in Christ in how we show up online, and Part Two highlighted how what we scroll past can shape our hearts and invite comparison. Now, we focus on the quiet, ordinary acts God honors most.
Even when no one notices, your service matters. God treasures our small acts of love far more than the applause of the world. Colossians 3:23–24 reminds us,
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters… It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Matthew 6:4 encourages,
“…so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Our faithful, private efforts are never wasted—they nurture hearts, draw others closer to Christ, and reflect God’s glory in ways no social media post could ever capture. For ministry wives, much of this work happens in ordinary spaces: listening, praying, sending late-night messages of encouragement. It’s in the rhythm of these acts of love that God works most deeply.
In a world filled with polished images and highlight reels, it’s easy to wonder if what we do matters. But our discreet gestures—texts, calls, prayers, and small acts of service—have eternal impact. Our digital presence doesn’t need to be flashy. Often, it’s unassuming ways we serve that can carry lasting weight and honor God far beyond our digital footprint.
HIDDEN ACTS OF SERVICE
Beneath the surface, faithful service often looks like this:

Pausing mid-chores to pray for someone who’s hurting.

Offering a word of hope during a brief hallway conversation.

Tidying the church or restocking supplies after a long day.
And yet, if no one ever noticed, would these acts still be called obedience?
Could some of our weariness come not from serving, but from a longing to be seen?
While I know I have to wait for the Lord to say, “Well done”, I’m tired because my work is often unseen or overlooked.
Am I tired because I feel alone because no one has asked me how I am in longer than I can remember.
Even when service goes unseen, it matters far more than any likes or public praise. Service isn’t about being noticed—it’s about faithfully showing up in the everyday.
Scrolling social media can make our efforts feel small. Those perfectly lit photos, the calm, happy images of someone else’s life—they can make our messy reality feel inadequate. Comparison doesn’t need volume. It slips in quietly, leaving us to doubt our faithfulness. All the while, God is carrying out His plan of love in ways we cannot see.
When the Invisible is Everything
Commitment doesn’t require an audience. God isn’t keeping score of likes or comments. Real ministry—our ministry—lives in the unnoticed acts that stretch patience, grow empathy, and deepen obedience.
The moments we think don’t matter are often the very ones God uses to transform hearts—our own, our family’s, and our church’s.
I recently spent an evening assembling a gift basket for a family in our congregation going through a difficult season. I included a note, a few treats, and some encouragement. No one knew I was doing it, and there was no fanfare. The next day, when the family received it, I saw how God uses these quiet, hidden gestures to bring comfort and hope in ways that no social media post could ever truly show.

PRACTICAL WAYS TO FLOURISH IN HIDDEN SERVICE
- Celebrate hidden wins – Offer a kind word, send an encouraging note, or pray silently. Even when unseen, these gestures carry lasting, God-honoring impact.

Refocus your heart – Instead of asking, “Who is noticing me?” ask, “Am I faithful before God?” Sit with these questions and let them remind us that true strength comes from Him, not from attention or applause.

Protect private spaces – Set aside time for prayer, reflection, and family. These quiet rhythms nurture every act of service.

Lean into everyday grace – Ministry isn’t about perfection; it’s about showing up fully, faithfully, and lovingly.

The Eternal Impact of Hidden Service
Service out of the spotlight is where faith grows strongest. Simple expressions of love reach farther than any post ever could. The world may overlook these gestures, but God sees—and that is more than enough.
